The KTM 300 XC TPI is arguably the most accomplished cross-country racer available. Built to cover any offroad terrain fast, it takes all the best aspects from its motocross cousins, adds more power and torque, an 18" rear wheel, and fuel injection to become an unrivalled cross-country weapon.
01. ENGINE & EXHAUST
A legend in its own right, the KTM 300 cc 2-stroke engine has long been a favourite when it comes to enduro weaponry. This is largely down to its exceptional power, low-down torque and overall lightweight. Thanks to state-of-the-art engineering, innovative 2-stroke design, and revolutionary TPI fuel injection technology, this powerplant has become a truly refined unit.
The cylinder on the KTM 300 XC-W TPI has a bore of 72 mm and is fitted with a sophisticated power valve, providing ultra-smooth and controllable power characteristics. Being fuel-injected, the cylinder features two lateral domes which hold the fuel injectors, supplying fuel to the rear transfer ports. The downstream injection guarantees excellent atomization of the fuel with the upstreaming air. Thus, the loss of unburnt fuel is minimal for fewer emissions, more efficient combustion, and reduced fuel consumption. The cylinder also features a state-of-the-art power valve unit with a sophisticated mechanism for the lateral support exhaust ports. The exhaust port layout increases engine performance, while the upper contour of the exhaust port has been machined to ensure more accurate port timing.
Crankcases and engine covers
These compact engine cases are manufactured using a high-pressure die-cast production process which helps with weight reduction but maintains strength and durability. This design also allows for optimal shaft arrangements close to the center of gravity, resulting in ideal mass centralization and ride-ability.
The KTM 300 XC TPI is makes use of a robust 6-speed semi-close transmission features gear ratios perfectly in sync with the 300's power band. An advanced ´No Dirt´ gear shift lever design prevents mud and sand from jamming the joint of the lever and guarantees trouble-free shifting.
The KTM 300 XC TPI engine design allows for the implementation of a lateral balancer shaft in order to keep engine vibrations to a minimum. This means riders can focus on the obstacles ahead of them, with out distraction. After all, more comfort equals less fatigue.
The KTM 300 XC TPI employs the KTM-developed DDS clutch (damped diaphragm steel) with a robust steel basket, extremely heat resistant clutch plates and new, nitrated steel liners reducing the wear. This clever design employs a diaphragm spring instead of the usual coil springs, making for considerably easier clutch action. A diaphragm spring also leaves sufficient space for a damping system to be integrated into the clutch hub. The goal is traction, but durability is as well. Light operation and telepathic amounts of control are standard with this hydraulic Brembo actuated clutch.
The KTM 300 XC TPI engine is fitted with a 39 mm throttle body made by Dell`Orto. These regulate the airflow via a butterfly connected with a twin-cable throttle cam, which is operated by the handlebar throttle assembly, supported by a throttle position sensor that provides airflow data to the control unit. What all this means is, riders can precisely set the idle speed via the bypass screw, as well as easier cold starts.
Engine management system
The engine management system (EMS) of all 2-stroke XC TPI models features a control unit located below the seat. The ECU defines the ignition timing while the amount of fuel to inject is based on several sensor readings such as intake air pressure, throttle position, water temperature , and ambient air pressure. Thanks to altitude and temperature compensation, re-jetting is a thing of the past, meaning more time twisting throttles and less time turning screws. Should the rider decide to mount a radiator fan from the KTM PowerParts, it will be controlled directly by the EMS without needing to add an additional thermal switch.
Keeping the engine cool when the going gets tough comes courtesy of a pair of radiators, mounted close to the center of gravity. These make use of CFD technology (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and clever coolant circuit routing, achieving optimum engine temperature for the highest performance, in all conditions. Above all, the delta distributor, integrated into the frame triangle, features a large center tube for highly efficient coolant flow.
There's more to it than 'braaaap!'. The exhaust plays a key role in packing that signature 2-stroke punch. All KTM 300 XC-W TPI models feature heavy-duty exhaust headers made using an innovative 3D stamping process that produces a ribbed surface finish. This makes the pipe much stronger, with better impact resistance, while also helping to reduce noise. The silencer features a compact shape and end cap with internal designs individually developed for each model and mounted using an aluminium bracket for strength. In addition, the exhaust's overall shape provides a slim profile resulting in improved ground clearance, while a perforated inner silencer tube uses lightweight damping material for efficient and durable noise reduction.
The high-tech, lightweight chrome-moly steel frame has a knack for easy handling, outlandish rideability, precise cornering and excellent stability. You can also count on high torsional rigidity and low longitudinal stiffness. This results in better absorption of the energy created from the front and rear suspension, sucking up jumps and bumps. In short: more comfort and less rider fatigue. Laterally attached, lightweight engine head stays (the connection between cylinder head and frame) contribute to a low vibration level. In addition, it is easy to maintain and to work on and supplies ample space for the tank and other components. On the XC TPI models the upper frame tube features a slot where the oil filler cap is mounted, which feeds the oil tank via a hose inside the frame tube. The bike also features an extra-light subframe made of aluminium, which tiptoes the scales at less than 2 pounds.
The cast aluminium design offers low weight and a perfect flex behaviour. The single-component casting process eliminates any inconsistencies and inherent weak points created by welding. It’s better looking too.
The KTM 300 XC TPI is fitted with lightweight, CNC-machined hubs, high-end Giant rims and black spokes with lightweight aluminium nipples providing maximum stability at minimum weight. The latest Dunlop Geomax AT81 tires guarantee perfect traction and outstanding performance.
All XC-W models are fitted with the latest 48 mm diameter WP XPLOR upside-down forks, featuring a split fork design developed by WP and KTM. It is fitted with a spring on both sides, but features separated functions for each fork leg: compression damping is fitted on the left side, while rebound is on the right. So the fork can easily be adjusted for compression and rebound with the twist of a dial on top of the fork tubes (30 clicks each). Although already distinguished for outstanding response and damping characteristics, the fork features a calibrated mid-valve piston for consistent damping. The settings keep the front end higher in the stroke, providing impressive reserves against bottoming out.
The WP XACT shock absorber is the key element on the proven PDS rear suspension design (progressive damping system), where the shock is directly linked to the swingarm without an additional linkage system. This keeps weight lower and reduces the chances of hooking on rocks. The progressive damping is achieved by a second piston, which works together with a closed cup towards the end of the stroke. This design contributes to an optimal progression behaviour of the damping supported by a progressive shock spring. It is fully adjustable, including high and low-speed compression, so you can set the shock up to suit any track, trail and rider preferences.
Top quality, CNC machined triple clamps have been a KTM trademark for years to ensure precise handling. The rubber damped handlebar fixation allows for two positions and an hour meter is fitted in order to let the rider know it’s time for a service.
When it comes to bringing this machine to stop, you'll be happy to have high-tech Brembo brake calipers and lightweight wavy discs doing the business. These also take years of competitive racing into account, providing the perfect combination of ideal pad density and steel quality for longevity and consistent feel.
All KTM XC models have lightweight, see-through polyethylene tanks with an integrated fuel pump system and a capacity of 2.25 gallons. A quick-release filler cap makes for easy and reliable closure. And don't worry about when the gas starts running thin - the aforementioned clear tanks mean you've always got an eye on the fuel level.
The air filter box design offers maximum protection of the air filter against soiling, while ensuring maximum airflow, and together with the intake snorkels, results in optimal power and throttle response. The large Twin Air air filter is mounted on a stiff cage, which at the same time holds the system in place. This design is so simple, you could still pop a fresh one in with a face full of mud. Without tools. In seconds.
03. ERGONOMICS & COMFORT
KTM engineers sure know how to handle handlebars. This tapered unit, made of high-strength aluminium by NEKEN, features a throttle assembly which has a twin-cable for TPI models just like their 4-stroke brothers with a double-cable aluminium body and straightforward free-play adjustment. A vulcanized grip sits on the right, while on the left side of the bar a comfortable ODI lock-on grip is mounted, which does not require any wire or glue to be fixed.
The XC range features state-of-the-art seat technology with a newly shaped surface that provides improved ergonomics and much better seat comfort thanks to higher foam padding. The seat is conveniently fixed to the bike using one long, lateral screw, making it safe and easy to handle.
Sophisticated ´No Dirt´ footpegs prevent clogging of the footpeg pivot, even when digging in deep ruts. Looking for a higher riding position? Then just mount the footpegs of the EXC models, which are 6 mm higher than the XC versions.
04. BODYWORK & GRAPHICS
The 2022 KTM XC Range receives a distinctive visual update, taking the bike even closer to the RED BULL KTM FACTORY RACING look, with a new blue seat and the distinctive motorsport finishing touch; the orange frame.
